Hey you! Drop the Scale

There are many reasons I would love to shift the conversation away from the number (cue Hitchcock scream 😱on the scale):

  1. It’s easy to get obsessive.
  2. It dovetails and reinforces a cultural push for the magazine appearance.
  3. It fails to accurately assess those with notable muscle mass.

But, the biggest reason I think traditional scales are useless is they don’t catch the mechanism that is ACTUALLY problematic when we talk about HEALTH and VITALITY. Huh? Let me explain…

Your Metabolic Health is the most important variable when we think about cardiovascular and diabetes risk as well as longevity and wellness. We get a window into your metabolic health by looking at LDL cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Triglycerides, Glucose, Insulin, and Waist Circumference, as a few common examples.

Interestingly, many humans who are classified as overweight or even obese in medical terms have NORMAL metabolic health markers (outside of their weight) and are therefore not as high risk overall. And many humans who are considered “normal” under weight standards have RAGING metabolic health markers, and therefore are classified as ‘moderate to high risk’ from a health perspective. Yup. Blows your mind doesn’t it??
