Postpartum ReBoot!

As a first time mom, I certainly received an “F” for how well I took care of myself…and I should know better!  As a result I fell under a cloud of fatigue and borderline thyroid issues that finally forced me to wake up and understand how important making time to care for myself was…both for me and the success of my family and life.  By the time my second little one came around, I was able to navigate protecting space for myself, and, most importantly, nourishing my body with the right lifestyle, food, and targeted hormonal and supplement support.

Postpartum: I’ve been there

As a mother of two children, I am very aware of the day-to-day realities of postpartum.  You’re overwhelmed, sleep-deprived, and you look at yourself in the mirror barely recognizing whom you see.  Whether you are balancing a career on partial-hold or managing all the responsibilities of the house — or both — you are being pulled in a million directions, all the time.  It’s hard to even consider taking care of yourself given all these realities…but that doesn’t stop you from feeling guilty about not doing it!

As a result of my own experience, I am incredibly passionate about helping women find their way back to vitality after baby.

What’s happening to you

Shortly after delivery, your hormones plummet, putting your body under incredible stress.   If you are already vulnerable to depression and anxiety, this change in hormones can result in high levels of one or both. This is happening on top of the baseline stress of figuring out how to be a mom.  And nature keeps the hits coming: blood loss during birth, nutrient loss (that can be exacerbated by prolonged breastfeeding if you are not being mindful to replete), the sheer assault of sleep deprivation…motherhood is not for wimps!

Recognizing the incredible nature of the challenge, some cultures ensure that a mom’s only job after childbirth is to recover.  New moms will stay in bed all day (for months!) while their baby and their food are brought to them. But for most of us, this is a fantasy.  In reality, we are running up and down days after a delivery, trying to manage our homes, keep our professional lives running, changing diapers, making dinner, supporting our spouses, and nursing/feeding around the clock.

How do we approach the Postpartum time at DCIM?

First, we listen to your body.  Our foremost principle is that birth and the postpartum is a natural process.  Our intention is to enhance the body’s ability to heal, as opposed to leaning toward pharmaceutical medications to manage or suppress symptoms.  (Of course, there are certainly times and places for a more assertive approach and we can explore medications if/when indicated.)

Second, we assess the rhythm of your day, what support is available, and your other responsibilities to help you prioritize and delegate. It’s often the case that when you are so steeped in the minutiae it’s difficult to see where you can let go.

Finally, we thoroughly analyze the nutrients and hormones that are commonly vulnerable to imbalances in the post-partum time.  We will design individualized replacement strategies and lifestyle plans to give your body what it needs to come back into balance.

It’s never too late.

Has it been years since your baby was born?  Don’t fret! Sometimes it takes that long before you realize it’s your spring to renew.  We can still help.

We may not be able to transport ourselves to the recovery-focused postpartum of other cultures, but we can thrive despite that.  You just need the right help.
