Two botanical supplements for hypothyroidism
There are TWO botanical supplements with good evidence in Hypothyroidism.
1. Ashwaghanda: Dosed correctly (ask a physician!), studies show that ashwaghanda can increase triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) levels by 40% and 20%, respectively, and reduces serum TSH levels by 17% from baseline. These changes are significant when compared with placebo! This basically means your thyroid is performing better and your symptoms will be alleviated.
2. Black Cumin Seed (Nigella): Dosed correctly (ask a physician!), black cumin seed has been shown to improve TSH, Thyroid Antibodies, (T3) Triiodothyronine and thyroxine (T4) levels when compared to placebo at statistically significant levels! Again, this means your thyroid output is improved and there is even a knock down on those pesky antibodies.
Beware, as there are many supplements on the market for “thyroid health”. It’s important to be picky about which you use, but also to know that the quality is assured. My best recommendation is to find a provider who will actually use laboratory data to assess your complete thyroid panel, all the nutrients associated with thyroid optimization, and have access to functional/advanced diagnostic tests. Good physicians well versed in supplements can also help you source high quality products. As always, this is not medical advice — but, just information!
