The Frustration around Hypothyroidism and Weight Gain
We ALL know and assume that Low Thyroid Function can cause weight gain. I often meet women that are HOPING we will find hypothyroidism as it may explain why their weight is so resistant, and are literally disappointed when their thyroid looks healthy.
Now, It is the case that your basal metabolic rate (the beat of your metabolism) will be slowed if your thyroid is underactive. Therefore, your body will expend less energy and store more energy as fat. But the problem is — many, many women with hypothyroidism are still having trouble with weight gain despite being treated for hypothyroidism! Raise your hand if you feel me! 🙋🏻♀️
So, if you’re Hypothyroid and still trying to get to your optimal weight — you might want to inquire about:
- Cortisol (released from the adrenals, and increases fat storage when imbalanced)
- Leptin (your satiety hormone that becomes less effective as your body weight increases — thus creating a feed forward cycle)
- Inflammation: (Toxins, infections, or stress)
- Blood Sugar Imbalances and
- Poorly Individualized Nutrition
- Mitochondrial Dysfunction: the Gas for your entire body, ATP, is made by your mitochondria.
- Female Sex Hormone Dysregulation (often the concurrence of conditions that disrupt your Estrogen, Progesterone, and Testosterone levels can be a road block in weight loss)
