My Other Baby…SCOBY

Scoby

Why do I wrestle with a bottle that’s larger than my head? Because I am invested in reaping the benefits of fermented foods, here I have kombucha in my hands, but our home is full of them!

My top three thoughts on fermented foods :

1. Fermented foods are the most affordable way to naturally improve digestion – by providing your gut with natural supports for breaking down food, pouring in special nutrients, and sneaking in probiotics every time you consume them.
2. You can make them yourself! And it can be an excellent way to keep veggies longer if you tend to cook for only 1-2 people at a time. I highly recommend Fermentation for Beginners by Press if you’re just getting started. And I’d be glad to share some of my SCOBY (the little colony of bugs in my personal kombucha stash) if you ask.
3. That being said, if you know making fermented foods is not gonna happen – then purchase them. I’d recommend starting with a simple sauerkraut and have a 1/2 teaspoon as a side to any meal you’re eating. Think of it more as a “medicinal” food. And as you get used to the taste, and your body adjusts to the new level of probiotics – you can move up. Miso and Goat Kefir are my two other store-bought favorites.

Here’s to happy bellies!
