Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism
(ALERT: Personal Story Coming Up!) Post-partum, I did not feel great. I convinced myself it was normal! 2 years later, I gave in and went to see a physician. I was told my thyroid was “unremarkable” and my labs “normal.” I felt UNHEARD, UNCARED for, and honestly DISCARDED. I didn’t give up: ordered my own tests. And…VALIDATED: beginning stages of Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism. Ugh.
GOOD NEWS! After obsessively researching and studying, I adopted an approach that stopped Hashimoto’s from expressing itself. No more Bow Tie!
Around 1 in 10 women suffer from Hypothyroidism. By far the most common type in the United States is Hashimoto’s.
In order to express itself, Hashimoto’s needs three things:
- Vulnerability to Autoimmunity (i.e. family history)
- Intestinal Permeability (the way it activates the Immune System)
- Stress/Trigger (acute stress, like loss of a loved one, or biological stresses, like toxins, infections, childbirth)
How we diagnose:
- Thyroid feels diffusely large to touch
- An Ultrasound showing a diffusely enlarged thyroid with a heterogeneous texture
- A more sophisticated lab panel (In my case, my “Washington DC Top Doc” only ordered a TSH)
How we help at DCIM:
- Measuring your Antibody levels (Anti-TPO and Thyroglobulin) to follow the trend and degree of your Autoimmune expression
- Setting you up for success with Food, Lifestyle, Detoxification, Gut Health, and Adrenal Function Protocols. The pillars of your new approach!
- Hormone Replacement as necessary.
Typical managed care practices “treat” hashimotos (if they diagnose it at all) by just focusing on #3: Upping the dose! While hormone replacement therapy can be helpful, EXPECT MORE! Move beyond “managing” to STOPPING. I should know: I prevented the expression of Hashimotos entirely in myself. We do the same with our autoimmune thyroid patients. Added BONUS? It also prevents other autoimmune diseases which tend to co-express. Who doesn’t want that?!
